This mix is ideal for creating a bioactive setup, as it will allow the clean-up crew and other invertebrates places to hide as well as items to eat, which in turn will all feed back vital nutrients into the substrate to sustain plant life and growth.
Adding leaf litter helps create multiple microclimates while simultaneously keeping the substrate healthier; it also helps keep the substrate humid or dry depending on the biome you wish to replicate. It's perfect for reptiles, invertebrates, and amphibians. It can also be used as a great food source for invertebrate species like beetles, isopods, and millipedes.
