Give shelter a purpose

Choose hides and cover that let the animal retreat fully. Where appropriate, provide shelter in different environmental zones so choosing security does not require giving up access to the right conditions.

Secure the layout

Fix branches, backgrounds and heavy features so they cannot fall, rotate or trap the animal. Check load-bearing capacity and reachable openings, especially when the animal is still growing.

Recheck lamps after decorating

A new branch can bring an animal closer to a heat or UVB lamp. Reassess clearances, basking positions and shade whenever the layout changes; keep guards, vents and probes accessible.

Choose for cleaning and the animal

Check that surfaces can be maintained in the intended environment. For live plants, verify suitability for the exact species, including any animal likely to eat or damage them; a plant sold for terrariums is not automatically edible.

Are hides just decorative?

No. Shelter lets an animal withdraw from view and use the habitat with greater choice. Size and placement matter; choose from the needs of the species rather than appearance alone.

Can I use the same branches for any reptile?

Check diameter, grip, strength and installation against the animal’s size and behaviour. A small lightweight branch may be inappropriate for a heavier animal, even if it fits inside the enclosure.

Are all live terrarium plants safe to eat?

No. Confirm the plant’s identity and suitability for your animal before installation, especially for herbivores and animals that investigate foliage by eating it. Growing conditions and treatment history also matter.

Can decoration change heating and UVB exposure?

Yes. Climbing features alter the distance to lamps, while dense cover can change the available shade and airflow. Recheck environmental measurements after adding or repositioning decor.
