Explore reptile setupsConsider the species, humidity, ventilation, digging behaviour and feeding method. Bedding marketed for one animal is not automatically appropriate for every life stage or every enclosure.
For a rectangular floor, length × width × depth in centimetres divided by 1,000 gives the approximate volume in litres. Allow for the actual layout and follow product directions; compressed materials can expand after preparation.
Remove waste and spoiled food promptly and monitor for persistently wet areas, mould and odour. Replacement frequency depends on the material, stocking and conditions; there is no single interval for all substrates.
A bag of soil alone does not establish a functioning bioactive habitat. Plan drainage where needed, plants, suitable clean-up organisms and ongoing monitoring. Routine waste checks still matter.
Start with species-specific guidance and the individual animal’s needs. Compare moisture retention, particle size, digging depth and cleaning requirements alongside the rest of the setup; there is no universal best bedding.
Multiply the floor length, width and planned depth in centimetres, then divide by 1,000. A 120 × 60 cm floor at 5 cm depth is about 36 litres before allowing for decor or other adjustments.
No. Some materials are intended for drier conditions and perform poorly when kept wet. Check the product instructions and consider airflow, drainage and a suitable local humid retreat rather than soaking an unsuitable bedding.
No. Remove waste as needed, check animal health and monitor the substrate and clean-up community. A bioactive system needs maintenance and does not remove the need for good hygiene.
