What animals can eat mealworms?
Live mealworms are widely used as part of a varied diet for insect-eating reptiles and amphibians. Depending on the animal’s species, age and individual feeding plan, they may be suitable for bearded dragons, leopard geckos, skinks, frogs, toads and many other insectivores. They are also popular with insect-eating birds and selected exotic pets.
Always choose prey that is appropriately sized for your animal. Mealworms should form part of a varied, species-appropriate diet rather than being the only feeder offered. Follow the guidance of a reptile vet or experienced keeper if you are unsure what or how much to feed.
How to feed live mealworms
- Place the required number in a smooth-sided feeding dish to help prevent escape.
- Gut-load them with a suitable insect food before feeding, following the gut-loading product’s directions.
- Dust with calcium or vitamin supplements only where required by your animal’s established supplementation plan.
- Remove uneaten mealworms after feeding and do not allow them to remain loose in the enclosure.
How to store mealworms
Keep mealworms in a cool, dark and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Bulk bags should be transferred to a suitable smooth-sided, ventilated container or tray after arrival. Maintain clean bedding and remove any spoiled food promptly.
Offer a suitable dry feed and a small moisture source when needed, taking care not to create damp conditions. Cooler storage slows development, while warm conditions encourage mealworms to pupate more quickly. Check them regularly and always follow the instructions supplied with your livefood.
Frequently asked questions
Are these mealworms alive?
Yes. This listing is for live regular mealworms, dispatched as livefood and protected by our Live Arrival Guarantee.
Are live mealworms better than dried mealworms?
Live mealworms provide movement that can encourage natural feeding behaviour, and they can be gut-loaded before use. Dried mealworms may be convenient in other situations, but they are not a direct substitute in every animal’s diet.
How long do live mealworms keep?
Storage life varies with temperature, ventilation and care. Keeping them cool and properly maintained slows their development, while warmer conditions shorten the time before they pupate.
Can I buy mealworms in bulk?
Yes. Alongside the regular 60g tub, choose a 250g or 500g bulk bag for frequent feeding or multiple animals.
Livefood may arrive separately from other products in the same order. Please review the delivery information and photograph any arrival issue within the timeframe stated by our Live Arrival Guarantee.
