Choose from five live woodlice and isopod species for bioactive terrariums, clean-up crews and naturalistic reptile or amphibian enclosures. These detritivores help break down decaying organic matter and can live and breed in suitable bioactive set-ups.
Choose your species
-
Giant Orange Woodlice (Porcellio sp.) – a larger orange isopod reaching up to around 18mm. Suitable as a bioactive custodian and may also be offered as occasional livefood. Supplied as a starter culture with an average of 3–5 visible woodlice plus eggs in the substrate.
-
Tropical Grey Woodlice – a tropical grey woodlice pre-pack for bioactive clean-up crews.
-
Mini Speckled Woodlice – a pre-packed smaller speckled woodlice culture for bioactive terrariums.
-
Dairy Cow Woodlice (Porcellio laevis) – a larger, boldly patterned species reaching up to around 18mm. Suitable for clean-up crews and supplied as approximately 5ml of woodlice per tub.
-
T-Albino Isopods – a relatively hardy pale isopod reaching around 18mm, suited to tropical and more arid environments when an appropriately moist refuge is provided.
Bioactive clean-up crew
Woodlice and isopods shelter beneath bark, rocks and within the substrate, where they help recycle decaying material. They require access to a damp, humid microclimate to thrive, even in drier enclosures. Provide leaf litter, hiding places and a nutritious vegetable, fruit or dedicated invertebrate food.
Delivery and culture care
Your selected culture is delivered in a ventilated plastic tub with a soil-based substrate. Culture numbers and life stages naturally vary, and very young isopods or eggs may be hidden in the substrate. Introduce them to a prepared enclosure promptly and maintain suitable moisture, ventilation and food for the chosen species.
